What is Architectural Glass?

Architectural glass is a high-performance building material engineered specifically for use in construction and building envelope applications. Unlike standard commercial glass, architectural glass is processed through various techniques—including tempering, laminating, coating, and insulating—to meet demanding requirements for safety, structural performance, thermal insulation, solar control, and aesthetic appeal.

Architectural glass serves multiple functions within a building:

  • Encloses and protects interior spaces from weather and environmental conditions.
  • Provides natural daylighting, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
  • Offers thermal insulation, reducing heating and cooling energy consumption.
  • Controls solar heat gain and glare for occupant comfort.
  • Contributes to the aesthetic expression and visual identity of the building.

Architectural Glass Product Categories

KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS offers a complete range of architectural glass products:

Float Glass
The base product for all architectural glass, manufactured through the float glass process to produce flat, distortion-free glass with uniform thickness. Available in clear, low-iron, and body-tinted colors including grey, bronze, green, and blue. Standard thicknesses: 3mm to 19mm. Maximum size: up to 3300mm × 6000mm.

Tempered Safety Glass (ESG)
Heat-strengthened through a thermal tempering process at approximately 620-700°C, achieving four to five times the strength of annealed glass. Upon breakage, shatters into small, blunt-edged fragments for safety. Meets EN 12150 and ANSI Z97.1 standards. Standard thicknesses: 3mm to 19mm. Applications: facades, shower enclosures, balustrades, furniture.

Laminated Safety Glass
Two or more glass plies bonded with a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) or SGP (ionoplast) interlayer. Upon impact, glass fragments adhere to the interlayer, maintaining barrier integrity. Meets EN 14449 and ANSI Z97.1 standards. Available with clear, white, or colored interlayers. Applications: balustrades, facades, overhead glazing, security glazing.

Insulating Glass Units (IGUs)
Two or more glass panes separated by a sealed air space filled with air, argon, or krypton gas. Provides superior thermal and acoustic insulation. Available with low-E coatings, solar control coatings, and warm edge spacer technology. U-values from 1.1 to 0.85 W/m²K. Applications: curtain walls, windows, facades, skylights.

Coated Glass
Features microscopically thin metallic or metal oxide coatings for solar control and thermal insulation. Low-E coatings reflect long-wave infrared heat while allowing visible light to pass through. Available in pyrolytic (hard coat) or sputtered (soft coat) formulations. Applications: energy-efficient facades, curtain walls, windows.

Reflective Glass
Features a durable metal oxide coating providing solar heat rejection, glare reduction, and distinctive reflective appearance. Available in silver, blue, grey, bronze, and green. Applications: facades, curtain walls, commercial glazing.

Patterned and Decorative Glass
Includes rolled patterned glass (Mistlite, Nashiji, Karatachi, Flora, Diamond, Water, Moru, May Flower), screen-printed glass with ceramic frit, digitally printed glass with photo-realistic imagery, and color PVB laminated glass with colored interlayers. Applications: interior partitions, decorative facades, spandrel panels, furniture.

Curved and Bent Glass
Available in single-curve, double-curve, and free-form geometries using hot bending or cold bending technologies. Can be tempered, laminated, or incorporated into insulating glass units. Applications: curved facades, skylights, canopies.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between tempered glass and laminated glass for architectural applications?
A: Tempered glass is heat-strengthened to achieve four to five times the strength of annealed glass and shatters into small, blunt-edged fragments upon impact, reducing injury risk. It is ideal for applications requiring high mechanical strength. Laminated glass bonds two or more glass plies with an interlayer; upon impact, glass fragments adhere to the interlayer, maintaining barrier integrity. It is required for guards, balustrades, and overhead glazing where post-breakage performance is critical. For maximum safety, tempered laminated glass combines both technologies.

Q2: What U-values can architectural glass achieve for energy-efficient buildings?
A: KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS architectural glass can achieve U-values from 1.1 W/m²K (double glazed configurations with low-E coating and argon fill) to 0.85 W/m²K (triple glazed configurations). These values meet or exceed the requirements of most international energy codes including Passivhaus standards. Performance can be further optimized through coating selection, gas fill, spacer technology, and glass type.

Q3: What safety standards do KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS architectural glass products comply with?
A: KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS architectural glass products comply with EN 12150 (thermally toughened safety glass), EN 14449 (laminated glass), EN 12600 (impact test), ANSI Z97.1 (safety glazing materials), CPSC 16 CFR 1201 (architectural glazing materials), and IBC (International Building Code) requirements. Products are CE marked and manufactured under ISO 9001 quality management systems.

Insulated glass is a glass assembly composed of two or more pieces of glass, evenly separated by effective support, sealed with a binder around the glass layer to form a dry gas space between the glass layers.Glass components can be made of clear glass, tinted glass, reflective glass, laminated glass, tempered glass, etc.according to customer's request.

Its excellent efficiency in solar heat insulation, greatly reduces cooling loads.

Dry air inside the enclosure renders the surface free from misting.

More excellent efficiency will be if fill in argon or other inert gases.rom misting.
