What is Back Painted Glass?

Back painted glass—also known as lacquered glass or opaque glass—is a decorative flat glass produced by applying a durable coating to one surface of high-quality float glass. The coating, which is a high-performance paint, is applied using precision techniques and then cured through a baking process to permanently bond it to the glass surface.

Unlike body-tinted glass, where color is achieved by adding pigments throughout the glass melt, back painted glass starts with clear or ultra-clear float glass and adds the color as a surface layer. This results in a brilliant, highly reflective, and uniformly opaque finish that cannot be achieved with tinted glass. The coating is applied to the back surface, meaning the glass is viewed from the uncoated side—protecting the paint from scratches, wear, and environmental damage.

Back painted glass is produced using clear or ultra-clear low-iron float glass substrates, ensuring a bright appearance with minimal color distortion. The paint is resistant to humidity, making it ideal for use in high-moisture environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Back Painted Glass Types

KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS offers back painted glass in two primary categories:

TypeDescriptionTemperingBest For
Standard Lacquered GlassOrganic paint applied to glass surface, cured at low temperature (30-45°C)❌ NOT compatibleInterior applications: wall cladding, splashbacks, furniture, cabinetry
Post-Temperable Back Painted GlassCeramic frit or proprietary inorganic coating applied before heat treatment✅ Fully compatibleExterior applications: spandrel, facades; interior applications requiring safety glass

Important Processing Limitations

For standard lacquered back painted glass:

  • Tempering: ❌ NOT compatible. The organic coating decomposes and carbonizes at the high temperatures required for tempering (approximately 600°C+). The coating will burn, discolor, bubble, and lose adhesion.
  • All cutting, drilling, edge grinding, and notching must be completed BEFORE the lacquer coating is applied, as no further fabrication is possible after painting.
  • For safety glass requirements, glass must be tempered BEFORE painting, or post-temperable (ceramic frit) back painted glass must be used instead.
  • Installation should be completed promptly after un-crating to prevent any potential contamination from environmental moisture.

For post-temperable back painted glass:

  • Tempering: ✅ Fully compatible. The ceramic frit or inorganic coating fuses to the glass surface during the tempering process.
  • All cutting, drilling, and processing must be completed before heat treatment.
  • The coated side should face up in the furnace during heat treating.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between back painted glass and body-tinted float glass?

A: Back painted glass starts with clear or ultra-clear float glass and has a durable paint coating applied to the back surface, creating a brilliant, opaque, and highly reflective finish. The color is on the surface and is viewed through the clear glass, which protects the paint from damage. Back painted glass is 100% opaque and offers superior color brilliance and consistency. Body-tinted glass has color pigments mixed throughout the glass melt, resulting in a translucent rather than opaque appearance. Painted glass is the preferred choice for applications requiring full opacity and a bright, reflective finish.

Q2: Can back painted glass be tempered?

A: The answer depends on the coating type. Standard lacquered back painted glass cannot be tempered because the organic coating decomposes and carbonizes at the high temperatures required for tempering (approximately 600°C+). The coating would burn, discolor, bubble, and lose adhesion. For safety glass requirements, glass must be tempered BEFORE painting, or post-temperable (ceramic frit) back painted glass must be used instead. Post-temperable back painted glass uses ceramic frit or proprietary inorganic coatings that fuse to the glass surface during the tempering process and can be tempered.

Q3: Can back painted glass be laminated or used in insulating glass units?

A: Yes. Back painted glass can be laminated with PVB or SGP interlayers and can also be used in insulating glass units (IGU), with the painted surface facing the cavity to protect the coating from damage. All cutting, drilling, and other processing must be completed before painting, as no further fabrication is possible after the coating is applied. Post-temperable back painted glass offers the same laminating and IGU compatibility with the added benefit of being fully temperable.

Back painted glass is a unique use of glass that has been growing in popularity in recent years. It is essentially exactly what it sounds like- glass that has been painted on the back side. That way, from the front side, the glass is no longer translucent, but instead a solid color.

Thickness: 3mm 4mm 5mm 6mm

size: 1830*2440, 3300*2140mm

The applications for back painted glass vary widely and it is commonly used in both residential and commercial buildings. One of the main uses of back painted glass is simply as a design element. Glass has always added a unique look in any building project which usually translates to a sleek, modern appearance. Back painted glass takes this one step further in that the cool, hard surface remains, but color is added to match any palette.
