Clear Float Glass | Standard Architectural Glass with Excellent Clarity from KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS

KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS Clear Float Glass is a high-quality, standard architectural glass produced through the float glass process—a method that involves floating molten glass over a bath of molten tin to create a perfectly flat, distortion-free ribbon with uniform thickness and excellent optical clarity. As a fundamental building material in the construction industry, clear float glass offers good visible light transmittance, stable performance, and reliable mechanical strength at an economical

What is Clear Float Glass?

Clear float glass is a soda-lime silicate glass produced by melting a blend of high-quality silica sand, soda ash, limestone, dolomite, and recycled glass at approximately 1,500-1,600°C. The molten glass flows onto a bath of molten tin, where it spreads evenly under the forces of gravity and surface tension to form a perfectly flat ribbon with smooth, distortion-free surfaces. As the ribbon moves forward, it gradually cools and solidifies before passing through an annealing lehr—a long furnace where the temperature is carefully reduced to relieve internal stresses. This process results in 'annealed' glass: a stable, durable, and optically clear product ready for cutting and processing.

Clear float glass is produced in compliance with EN 572-1, EN 572-2, and EN 572-9 standards, and is CE-marked for use in building applications. KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS clear float glass is available in a full range of thicknesses and can be processed into tempered glass, laminated glass, insulating glass units, bent glass, coated glass, and mirrors.

Data based on CSG Clear Float Glass. Visible light transmittance values may vary slightly by manufacturer. 6mm clear float glass typically provides VLT of approximately 87-89%.

Key Optical Metrics Explained

  • Visible Light Transmittance (VLT): The percentage of visible light passing through the glass. Higher values mean more natural daylight.
  • Solar Transmittance (Tsol): The percentage of solar energy passing directly through the glass.
  • U-Value: Measures heat transfer rate. Lower U-value means better insulation.
  • Shading Coefficient (SC): The ratio of solar heat gain through the glass compared to standard 3mm clear glass. Lower values indicate better solar control.
  • Relative Heat Gain (RHG): The total heat entering through the glass, combining direct solar transmission and re-radiated absorbed heat.
  • Sound Insulation (Rw): Weighted sound reduction index—higher values indicate better acoustic performance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the visible light transmittance of clear float glass?

A: Visible light transmittance varies by thickness. 3mm clear float glass delivers 90.6% VLT; 6mm provides 89.6% VLT; 8mm provides 89.0% VLT; and 19mm provides 85.5% VLT. Standard clear float glass retains a faint greenish tint from iron oxide content in the raw materials—a characteristic that becomes more noticeable as thickness increases. For applications requiring maximum clarity without any green tint, low-iron float glass is recommended.

Q2: What are the main applications of clear float glass?

A: Clear float glass is one of the most versatile glass products available. Architectural applications are extensive—commonly used for windows, facades, skylights, curtain walls, and shopfronts, allowing maximum daylight penetration while providing clear outward visibility. It is also widely used as the substrate for specialized glazing such as reflective, tinted, and low-emissivity (Low-E) glass, forming the backbone of energy-efficient façade systems. In interior design, it is used for glass partitions, tabletops, cabinets, mirrors, shelving, and balustrades. Beyond architecture, it serves as base material for laminated safety glass, solar panels, automotive windshields, and display glass.

Q3: Can clear float glass be tempered, laminated, or coated?

A: Yes. KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS clear float glass is fully compatible with tempering (EN 12150), laminating (EN ISO 12543), and insulating glass unit fabrication. It can also be heat-strengthened, bent, coated, silvered, sandblasted, or acid-etched. Clear float glass is often used as a base glass for an entire range of glass products including mirrors, acid-etched glass, tempered and laminated glass, safety and security glass, coated glass such as solar-control glass and insulating glass, and double glazing and triple glazing units. Its versatility and ease of fabrication make it the preferred choice as a base material for advanced processing.

Clear Float Glass is made by high-quality sand, natural ores and chemical materials by mixing them and melting them at high temperature.
