What is Color Laminated Glass?

Color laminated glass is a type of laminated safety glass that incorporates a colored polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer between two or more layers of glass. Unlike traditional laminated glass which uses a clear interlayer, color laminated glass uses pigmented PVB films that are permanently bonded between the glass plies under heat and pressure. The color is contained within the interlayer itself, not on the glass surface, ensuring that the color remains uniform, fade-resistant, and protected from scratching or environmental wear.

The colored interlayer system allows architects and designers to achieve a wide spectrum of color possibilities—from subtle transparent tints to bold opaque statements—without the need for specialized tinted glass or surface coatings. Color laminated glass delivers the same safety, security, UV protection, and acoustic benefits as standard laminated glass, with the added advantage of decorative color.

Color Systems and Options

KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS offers color laminated glass through leading PVB interlayer systems:

Vanceva Color System (Eastman)
The Vanceva color system is based on a foundational palette of four key colors (pink, blue, grey, and yellow) in two different light transmittances, creating a base palette of eight colors. By combining up to four interlayer layers, the system produces more than 69,000 transparent, translucent, and solid color options. The system includes:

  • Foundation colors: Eight basic colors in two light-transmittance levels
  • Specialty colors: Concentrated colorants for brilliant single-layer hues
  • White Collection: High-performance white interlayers with specified light transmittance
  • Earth Tones: 11 natural shades of blue, grey, green, brown, and bronze

Color Matching
Colors can be matched to RAL, Pantone, RGB, or NCS color standards. The interlayers are manufactured with heat- and light-stable colorants to resist fading and ensure long-term color stability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between color laminated glass and tinted float glass?
A: Color laminated glass achieves its color through a pigmented PVB interlayer permanently bonded between glass plies. The color is contained within the interlayer, not on the glass surface, ensuring uniform, fade-resistant color that is protected from scratching. Tinted float glass has color pigments mixed throughout the glass melt during manufacturing, resulting in a translucent color that is integral to the glass itself. Color laminated glass offers a much wider range of colors (including opaque options) and provides the additional safety, security, UV protection, and acoustic benefits of laminated glass.

Q2: Can color laminated glass be tempered?
A: Yes. Color laminated glass can be manufactured using tempered glass plies, resulting in tempered laminated glass that combines the strength and safety characteristics of tempered glass with the decorative color and post-breakage integrity of laminated glass. The lamination process with colored PVB interlayers is fully compatible with tempered glass substrates. All tempering must be completed before lamination.

Q3: What color options are available and can custom colors be matched?
A: KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS offers color laminated glass through leading PVB interlayer systems such as Vanceva, which provides more than 69,000 transparent, translucent, and solid color options. Colors can be matched to RAL, Pantone, RGB, or NCS color standards. The interlayers are manufactured with heat- and light-stable colorants to resist fading and ensure long-term color stability. Custom color matching is available upon request.

Laminated glass (LG) is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by a thin polymer interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), lonoplast polymers, cast in place (CIP) liquid resin, or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), between its two or more layers of glass. The interlayer, made through heat and pressure, keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic 'spider web' cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass.

Extremely high safety

The PVB interlayer withstands penetration from impact. Even if the glass cracks, splinters will adhere to the interlayer and not scatter. In comparison with other kinds of glass, laminated glass has much higher strength to resist shock, burglary, burst and bullets.

Energy-saving building materials

PVB interlayer impedes the transmission of solar heat and reduces cooling loads.

Create aesthetic sense to buildings

Laminated glass with a tinted interlayer will beautify the buildings and harmonize their appearances with surrounding views which meet the demand of architects.

Sound control

PVB interlayer is an effective absorber of sound.

Ultraviolet screening

The interlayer filters out ultraviolet rays and prevents the furniture and curtains from fading effects.

Laminated glass is used for architecture, glazing, automobile safety, photovoltaic, UV protection, and artistic expression. The most common use of laminated glass is skylight glazing and automobile windshields. In geographical areas requiring hurricane-resistant construction, laminated glass is often used in exterior storefronts, curtain walls, and windows.
