What is Karatachi Patterned Glass?
Karatachi patterned glass—also known as figured glass, rolled glass, or Puzzle glass—is a decorative flat glass produced through the rolling (or pressing) process. During manufacturing, molten glass is passed between two water-cooled metal rollers. One roller is engraved with the Karatachi pattern, which imprints the design onto the surface of the semi-molten glass. The result is a glass sheet with a distinctive three-dimensional embossed pattern on one side and a smooth surface on the reverse.
In optical terms, Karatachi patterned glass is translucent rather than transparent—it allows light to pass through while preventing clear visibility through the glass. The Karatachi pattern itself features a distinctive design of delicate, intersecting lines or a subtle wave-like texture that adds a refined, decorative quality to the glass surface. Pilkington offers Karatachi™ as one of its three distinctive Texture Glass patterns, alongside Mistlite™ and Nashiji™.
Production Process
Karatachi patterned glass is manufactured using the rolled glass process:
- Melting: High-quality raw materials (silica sand, soda ash, limestone, etc.) are melted at approximately 1,500°C in a furnace.
- Rolling: The molten glass flows between two water-cooled metal rollers. One roller is engraved with the Karatachi pattern, which imprints the design onto the glass surface.
- Annealing: The patterned glass ribbon passes through an annealing lehr where it is gradually cooled to relieve internal stresses.
- Cutting: The cooled glass is cut to standard or custom sizes.
Unlike surface coatings or films, the Karatachi pattern is physically embossed into the glass surface—making it permanent and resistant to wear, fading, or peeling.
