Karatachi patterned glass—also known as figured glass, rolled glass, or Puzzle glass—is a decorative flat glass produced through the rolling (or pressing) process. During manufacturing, molten glass is passed between two water-cooled metal rollers. One roller is engraved with the Karatachi pattern, which imprints the design onto the surface of the semi-molten glass. The result is a glass sheet with a distinctive three-dimensional embossed pattern on one side and a smooth surface on the reverse.
In optical terms, Karatachi patterned glass is translucent rather than transparent—it allows light to pass through while preventing clear visibility through the glass. The Karatachi pattern itself features a distinctive design of delicate, intersecting lines or a subtle wave-like texture that adds a refined, decorative quality to the glass surface. Pilkington offers Karatachi™ as one of its three distinctive Texture Glass patterns, alongside Mistlite™ and Nashiji™.
Karatachi patterned glass is manufactured using the rolled glass process:
Unlike surface coatings or films, the Karatachi pattern is physically embossed into the glass surface—making it permanent and resistant to wear, fading, or peeling.
| Thickness | Visible Light Transmittance (VLT) | Visual Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 3mm | ~92% | High light transmission with moderate privacy |
| 4mm | ~92% | Balanced light and privacy |
| 5mm | ~92% | Balanced light and privacy |
| 6mm | ~92% | Good privacy with excellent light |
| 8mm | ~90% | Enhanced privacy with good light |
VLT values are typical for clear Karatachi patterned glass. Colored glass (bronze, blue, green, gray, amber) will have lower VLT depending on the tint density. Bronze Karatachi typically offers transmittance greater than 80%.

Q1: What is the difference between Karatachi patterned glass and other patterned glass patterns?
A: Karatachi patterned glass features a distinctive design of delicate, intersecting lines or a subtle wave-like texture. It is one of many patterned glass designs available—alongside other popular patterns such as Nashiji, Mistlite, Millennium, Flora, Diamond, May Flower, and Crystal. Karatachi is offered by Pilkington as one of its three distinctive Texture Glass patterns, alongside Mistlite™ and Nashiji™. The pattern is also referred to as 'Puzzle' in some markets. Each pattern offers different levels of obscurity and visual effect, with Karatachi providing a unique geometric texture that is highly valued for contemporary interior design.
Q2: What is the light transmittance of Karatachi patterned glass and can it be tempered?
A: Clear Karatachi patterned glass typically delivers visible light transmittance (VLT) of approximately 92%. Bronze Karatachi offers transmittance greater than 80%. Colored variants (bronze, blue, green, gray, amber) will have lower VLT depending on the tint density. Yes, KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS Karatachi patterned glass is fully compatible with tempering (EN 12150), laminating (EN ISO 12543), and insulating glass unit fabrication. The pattern is permanently embossed into the glass surface and will not be affected by the tempering process.
Q3: What thicknesses, sizes, and colors are available for Karatachi patterned glass?
A: KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS Karatachi patterned glass is available in thicknesses from 3mm to 8mm, with 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, 6mm, 7.5mm, 8mm, and 10mm options. Standard sizes include 1220×1830mm, 1500×2000mm, 1524×2134mm, 1830×2440mm, 2000×2500mm, and 2140×3300mm. Colors are available in clear, bronze, grey, blue, green, and amber. Custom sizes can be produced to meet specific project requirements.
