Laminated tempered glass is a safety glass product that combines two distinct technologies: tempering and lamination.
Tempered Glass (Toughened Glass): Each individual glass ply is thermally tempered through a heating and rapid cooling process, which gives it approximately four to five times the strength of annealed glass. Tempered glass is designed to shatter into small, relatively harmless fragments upon breakage.
Laminated Glass: Two or more glass plies are bonded together with a polymer interlayer (PVB, SGP, or EVA) under heat and pressure. When broken, glass fragments adhere to the interlayer rather than falling free.
Laminated Tempered Glass combines both technologies: tempered glass plies are used as the substrate for lamination. The result is a product that offers the impact resistance of tempered glass and the post-breakage integrity of laminated glass.

Laminated tempered and laminated heat-strengthened glazing are the only types considered by the code to be structurally adequate under all conditions of installation. Single-layer tempered glass is acceptable only under limited applications where there is no walking surface below the glass, or where the walking surface below is permanently protected from the risk of falling glass.
Glass used in guards and handrails must comply with CPSC 16 CFR 1201 Cat II or ANSI Z97.1-2015 Class A and be permanently marked as safety glazing.

Q3: Can laminated tempered glass be cut or drilled after lamination?
A: No. All cutting, drilling, edge work, and tempering must be completed before the lamination process. Once the glass plies are bonded with the interlayer under heat and pressure, no further fabrication is possible without damaging the interlayer and compromising the structural integrity of the panel. This is why all specifications—including dimensions, hole positions, edge finishes, and interlayer type—must be provided before production begins.
Laminated glass (LG) is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by a thin polymer interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), lonoplast polymers, cast in place (CIP) liquid resin, or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), between its two or more layers of glass.The interlayer, made through heat and pressure, keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic 'spider web' cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass.
