What is Low Iron Tempered Glass?

Low iron tempered glass is a safety glass product manufactured by first producing low-iron float glass with significantly reduced iron oxide content—typically below 120 parts per million (ppm)—and then subjecting it to a thermal tempering process. The low-iron composition minimizes the greenish tint that is characteristic of standard float glass, resulting in a water-white, ultra-clear appearance with exceptional optical clarity. The thermal tempering process, which involves heating the glass to approximately 700°C and then rapidly cooling it, creates compressive stress on the surface and tensile stress in the interior, resulting in glass that is approximately four to five times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness.

Low iron tempered glass is produced in compliance with EN 12150-1 (thermally toughened soda lime silicate safety glass) and EN 12600 (impact test method and classification), and is CE-marked for use in building applications. KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS low iron tempered glass is available in a full range of thicknesses and can be further processed into laminated glass, insulating glass units, and coated glass.

Low iron glass consistently achieves higher visible light transmittance than standard clear glass while eliminating the greenish tint. The reduction in iron content delivers superior color neutrality and optical clarity that standard glass cannot match.

Key Features

  • Ultra-clear clarity: Water-white appearance with no greenish tint.
  • High light transmission: Visible light transmittance of 91.5% or higher at 4mm thickness.
  • True color neutrality: Unmatched color rendering for accurate visual perception.
  • High strength: Tempered glass offers approximately 4-5 times the strength of annealed glass.
  • Safety breakage: Upon impact, fractures into small, blunt-edged granules.
  • Thermal shock resistance: Withstands temperature fluctuations and thermal stress.
  • Low iron content: Fe2O3 content below 120 ppm.
  • Processing compatible: Can be cut, edged, drilled, laminated, and coated (all before tempering).
  • Body-color integrity: Purity throughout the entire glass thickness.
  • Multiple thickness options: Available from 3mm to 19mm.

Important Processing Limitations

All cutting, drilling, edge grinding, and notching must be completed before the tempering process. Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or machined after heat treatment. All edge work, including beveling and polishing, must be completed before tempering.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between low iron tempered glass and standard clear tempered glass?
A: Low iron tempered glass contains significantly less iron oxide (Fe2O3) below 120 ppm, compared to standard clear glass which typically contains 150-300 ppm. This reduction eliminates the greenish tint characteristic of standard glass, delivering water-white clarity with visible light transmittance of 91.5% or higher at 4mm thickness. Standard clear tempered glass typically provides 83-89% transmittance with a faint greenish hue. Both products offer the same strength and safety benefits of tempering, but low iron glass provides superior optical clarity and true color neutrality.

Q2: What thicknesses of low iron tempered glass are available?
A: KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS offers low iron tempered glass in thicknesses from 3mm to 19mm, with 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm being the most common. Custom thicknesses are available upon request. The visible light transmittance is measured at 91.5% or higher for 4mm thickness.

Q3: Can low iron tempered glass be cut or drilled after tempering?
A: No. All cutting, drilling, edge grinding, and notching must be completed before the glass undergoes thermal tempering. Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or machined after heat treatment. This is why all specifications—including dimensions, hole positions, and edge finishes—must be provided before production begins.

Tempered or toughened glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the interior into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to shatter into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards as ordinary annealed glass does. The granular chunks are less likely to cause injury.

No tong marks on the glass as adopts the horizontally tempering process.

5 times harder than ordinary annealed glass.

Once breakage occurs, the glass disintegrates into small cubical fragments which are relatively armless to human body.

It withstands abrupt change of temperature. For example, a piece of 5mm tolerate the temperature variations within the range of 200°C.

Tempered glass should under go heat soak test to improve safety in use.

Thickness: 3-19mm

Size: Min size 300*200mm,Max size 3300*15000mm

Tempered glass is used for its safety and strength in a variety of applications, including passenger vehicle windows, shower doors, aquariums, architectural glass doors and tables, refrigerator trays, mobile phone screen protectors, bulletproof glass components, diving masks, and plates and cookware.
