What is Moru Patterned Glass?

Moru patterned glass—also known as fluted glass, reeded glass, or ribbed glass—is a decorative flat glass produced through the rolling process. During manufacturing, molten glass is passed between two water-cooled metal rollers. One roller is engraved with the Moru pattern, which imprints the design onto the surface of the semi-molten glass. The result is a glass sheet with a distinctive three-dimensional textured surface featuring parallel vertical grooves and ridges on one side and a smooth surface on the reverse.

The name 'Moru' (also written as 'Muru' or 'Muro') refers specifically to fluted glass with a groove width of approximately 12mm—a dimension that has been widely recognized and tested by users, giving Moru glass its unique appearance and visual effect. It is important to note that while Moru glass is a type of fluted patterned glass, not all fluted patterned glass is Moru glass. Other fluted patterns include Flutelite-S, Flutelite-B, Vision Sun, and Canelado (which features a wider groove width of approximately 20mm).

In optical terms, Moru patterned glass is translucent rather than transparent—it allows light to pass through while preventing clear visibility through the glass. The vertical stripes create regular refraction and diffuse reflection as light passes through, producing a soft, blurred effect that effectively blocks outside sight lines while maintaining a bright, airy atmosphere.

Production Process

Moru patterned glass is manufactured using the rolled glass process:

  1. Melting: High-quality raw materials (silica sand, soda ash, limestone, etc.) are melted at approximately 1,500°C in a furnace.
  2. Rolling: The molten glass flows between two water-cooled metal rollers. One roller is engraved with the Moru pattern, which imprints the fluted texture onto the glass surface.
  3. Annealing: The patterned glass ribbon passes through an annealing lehr where it is gradually cooled to relieve internal stresses.
  4. Cutting: The cooled glass is cut to standard or custom sizes.

Unlike surface coatings or films, the Moru pattern is physically embossed into the glass surface—making it permanent and resistant to wear, fading, or peeling.

Key Features

  • Distinctive Vertical Stripe Pattern: Parallel grooves and ridges approximately 12mm wide create a unique fluted texture
  • Light Transmission with Privacy: Allows natural daylight while effectively obscuring clear visibility
  • Space Expansion Effect: Vertical stripes visually increase ceiling height and extend space, making rooms appear taller and more spacious—ideal for small or low-ceiling spaces
  • Soft Diffused Light: Regular refraction along vertical lines scatters light, creating a hazy, elegant beauty and soft ambient illumination
  • Permanent Pattern: Embossed into the glass surface—will not fade, wear, or peel over time
  • Versatile Colors: Available in clear, ultra-clear low-iron, bronze, grey, blue, and more
  • Processing Compatible: Can be cut, edged, drilled, tempered, laminated, and insulated
  • Durable and Easy to Clean: Wear-resistant, impact-resistant, scratch-proof, and resistant to deformation or yellowing over time
  • Stripe Width Options: Available in standard Moru (12mm groove width) and wider Canelado (20mm groove width)

Optical Performance

ThicknessVisible Light Transmittance (VLT)Visual Effect
3mm~92%High light transmission with moderate privacy
4mm~91%Balanced light and privacy
5mm~91%Balanced light and privacy
6mm~91%Good privacy with excellent light
8mm~90%Enhanced privacy with good light
10mm~89%Maximum privacy with good light

VLT values are typical for clear Moru patterned glass. Low-iron Moru glass can achieve 90-92% light transmission, providing unmatched clarity compared to standard glass. Colored glass (bronze, grey, blue) will have lower VLT depending on the tint density.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between Moru patterned glass and other fluted glass patterns?

A: Moru glass is a specific type of fluted patterned glass characterized by a groove width of approximately 12mm. While fluted patterned glass generally features vertical grooves or ridges running parallel to each other, Moru glass has a specific groove dimension that has been widely recognized and tested by users, giving it a unique appearance and visual effect. Other fluted patterns include Flutelite-S, Flutelite-B, Vision Sun (narrower ribs), and Canelado (wider ribs approximately 20mm). The Moru pattern is sometimes referred to as 'Changhong' (长虹) in the Chinese market.

Q2: What is the light transmittance of Moru patterned glass and can it be tempered?

A: Clear Moru patterned glass typically delivers visible light transmittance (VLT) of approximately 91%. Low-iron Moru glass can achieve 90-92% light transmission, providing unmatched clarity compared to standard glass. Colored variants (bronze, grey, blue) will have lower VLT depending on the tint density. Yes, KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS Moru patterned glass is fully compatible with tempering (EN 12150), laminating (EN ISO 12543), and insulating glass unit fabrication. The pattern is permanently embossed into the glass surface and will not be affected by the tempering process.

Q3: What thicknesses, sizes, and colors are available for Moru patterned glass?

A: KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS Moru patterned glass is available in thicknesses from 3mm to 12mm, with 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm being the most common. Standard sizes include 1220×1830mm, 1500×2000mm, 1524×2134mm, 1830×2440mm, 2000×2440mm, 2140×3300mm, and 2100×2440mm. Colors are available in clear, ultra-clear low-iron, bronze, grey, blue, brown, purple, and orange. Custom sizes can be produced to meet specific project requirements.
