What is Painted Glass?

Painted glass, also known as back-painted glass or lacquered glass, is a decorative flat glass produced by applying a durable paint coating to one surface of high-quality float glass. The coating is applied using precision techniques such as spraying, roller coating, or flow coating, and then oven-cured to permanently bond it to the glass surface.

Unlike body-tinted glass, where color is achieved by adding pigments throughout the glass melt, painted glass starts with clear or ultra-clear float glass and adds the color as a surface layer. This results in a brilliant, highly reflective, and uniformly opaque finish that cannot be achieved with tinted glass. The coating is applied to the back surface, meaning the glass is viewed from the uncoated side, protecting the paint from scratches, wear, and environmental damage.

Painted glass is produced using clear or ultra-clear low-iron float glass substrates, ensuring a bright, true-to-color appearance with minimal greenish tint. The paint is resistant to moisture and humidity, making it ideal for use in high-moisture environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Painted Glass vs. Ceramic Frit Glass

It is important to distinguish painted glass from ceramic frit glass, as they serve different purposes:

FeaturePainted Glass (Lacquered)Ceramic Frit Glass
Coating MaterialOrganic paint or lacquerInorganic ceramic enamel
Bonding MethodPhysical adhesion to glass surfaceFused into glass at high temperature
Tempering CompatibilityNot compatible for standard lacquer (organic coating decomposes at high temperature)Fully compatible (fuses during tempering)
DurabilityMay deteriorate, peel, or discolor over time in harsh conditionsService life comparable to the glass itself

Important Processing Limitations

For standard lacquered painted glass:

  • Tempering is not compatible. The organic coating decomposes and carbonizes at the high temperatures required for tempering (approximately 600 degrees Celsius and above). The coating will burn, discolor, bubble, and lose adhesion.
  • All cutting, drilling, edge grinding, and notching must be completed before the lacquer coating is applied, as no further fabrication is possible after painting.
  • For safety glass requirements, glass must be tempered before painting, or heat-treated painted glass (with temperable paint) must be used instead.

For heat-treated painted glass:

  • Tempering is fully compatible. The special temperable paint fuses to the glass surface during the tempering process.
  • All cutting, drilling, and processing must be completed before heat treatment.

Applications

Interior Architectural Applications:

  • Wall cladding for lobbies, reception areas, living rooms, and offices.
  • Kitchen splashbacks as heat-resistant and easy-to-clean surfaces behind cooktops.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between painted glass and body-tinted float glass?
A: Painted glass starts with clear or ultra-clear float glass and has a durable paint coating applied to the back surface, creating a brilliant, opaque, and highly reflective finish. The color is on the surface and is viewed through the clear glass, which protects the paint from damage. Painted glass is 100 percent opaque and offers superior color brilliance and consistency. Body-tinted glass has color pigments mixed throughout the glass melt, resulting in a translucent rather than opaque appearance. Painted glass is the preferred choice for applications requiring full opacity and a bright, reflective finish.

Q2: Can painted glass be tempered?
A: The answer depends on the coating type. Standard lacquered painted glass cannot be tempered because the organic coating decomposes and carbonizes at the high temperatures required for tempering (approximately 600 degrees Celsius and above). The coating would burn, discolor, bubble, and lose adhesion. For safety glass requirements, glass must be tempered before painting, or heat-treated painted glass with special temperable paint must be used instead. Heat-treated painted glass is fully compatible with tempering and is suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Q3: Can painted glass be used in kitchens and bathrooms?
A: Yes. Painted glass is resistant to moisture, humidity, and heat, making it ideal for kitchen splashbacks and bathroom walls. The smooth, non-porous surface is easy to clean and does not support the growth of harmful bacteria. For kitchen applications, it is recommended to use heat-treated (tempered) painted glass near heat sources.

Back painted glass is a unique use of glass that has been growing in popularity in recent years. It is essentially exactly what it sounds like- glass that has been painted on the back side. That way, from the front side, the glass is no longer translucent, but instead a solid color.

Thickness: 3mm 4mm 5mm 6mm

size: 1830*2440, 3300*2140mm

The applications for back painted glass vary widely and it is commonly used in both residential and commercial buildings. One of the main uses of back painted glass is simply as a design element. Glass has always added a unique look in any building project which usually translates to a sleek, modern appearance. Back painted glass takes this one step further in that the cool, hard surface remains, but color is added to match any palette.
