SGP laminated glass is a safety glass product manufactured by bonding two or more glass plies with a SentryGlas® (SGP) ionoplast interlayer. Unlike traditional PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayers, which were originally developed for automotive windshields and are softer and more flexible, SGP is a high-performance interlayer engineered specifically for demanding architectural applications.
The SGP interlayer is composed of an ionoplast polymer—a tough, rigid plastic material that provides exceptional mechanical properties. It is extruded without plasticizers, which eliminates the risk of plasticizer migration and ensures long-term edge stability without delamination. This allows SGP laminated glass to be used in 'open edge' applications such as frameless balustrades and point-supported facades where the edge of the glass is exposed to the environment.
The product was first introduced in 1998 as SentryGlas® Plus (SGP). Over time, the 'Plus' was dropped and the product became known as SentryGlas® or SG® interlayer. Today, SGP is manufactured by Kuraray and has been used in some of the most challenging architectural projects of the past 25 years.

SGP's shear modulus is more than 50 times that of PVB. This means that when SGP laminated glass is subjected to force, there is essentially no sliding between the glass plies. The two glass plies work as a single, monolithic piece of glass, with a bearing capacity twice that of PVB laminated glass. Under equal loads and thicknesses, the deflection of SGP laminated glass is only one-quarter that of PVB laminated glass.
Comparing PVB to SentryGlas laminates, SGP solutions can be 15 percent thinner and lighter while being 66 percent stronger than PVB laminates.

Laminated glass (LG) is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by a thin polymer interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), lonoplast polymers, cast in place (CIP) liquid resin, or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), between its two or more layers of glass.The interlayer, made through heat and pressure, keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces.
