This creates compressive stress on the surface and tensile stress in the interior, resulting in glass that is approximately four to five times stronger than annealed glass.
All fabrication—including cutting to dimensions, edgework, drilled holes, and notching—must be performed before strengthening or tempering. Once glass has been tempered, it cannot be cut, drilled, or modified in any way; any attempt to alter tempered glass will cause it to shatter completely.

Holes in the vicinity of a corner must be positioned so that the nearest edge of the hole is a minimum distance of 6.5 times the glass thickness from the corner.
Minimum Hole Diameter
Circular holes shall have a minimum diameter of 6mm (1/4 inch) or the thickness of the glass, whichever is greater.

Tempered or toughened glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the interior into tension. Such stresses cause the glass, when broken, to shatter into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards as ordinary annealed glass does.
