Toughened glass, also referred to as tempered glass, is a type of safety glass that has been processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. The thermal tempering process—the most common method—involves heating annealed glass to approximately 620-700°C and then rapidly cooling it with jets of cold air. This abrupt cooling puts the outer surfaces of the glass into compression while the interior remains in tension. The resulting compressive stress on the surface gives toughened glass its characteristic strength, approximately four to five times that of annealed glass of the same thickness.
When toughened glass breaks, it fractures into small, relatively harmless particles rather than sharp, jagged shards. This safety characteristic makes toughened glass one of the most widely used safety glass products in the building industry.
