What is Water Patterned Glass?

Water patterned glass—also known as water ripple glass, water wave glass, aqualite glass, or figured glass—is a decorative flat glass produced through the rolling process. During manufacturing, molten glass is passed between two water-cooled metal rollers. One roller is engraved with the water pattern, which imprints the design onto the surface of the semi-molten glass. The result is a glass sheet with a distinctive three-dimensional embossed texture on one side and a smooth surface on the reverse.

The name 'water patterned glass' reflects the glass's unique visual character—a fluid, organic ripple texture that flows freely without rigid rules, capturing the shape of a water surface when brushed by a gentle breeze. The embossing creates an irregular, rippled finish that produces soft, distorted light refractions, adding a freehand, poetic quality to any interior.

In optical terms, water patterned glass is translucent rather than transparent—it allows light to pass through while preventing clear visibility through the glass. The water ripple pattern creates regular refraction and diffuse reflection as light passes through, producing a soft, hazy effect that effectively obscures outside sight lines while maintaining a bright, airy atmosphere.

Production Process

Water patterned glass is manufactured using the rolled glass process:

  1. Melting: High-quality raw materials (silica sand, soda ash, limestone, etc.) are melted at approximately 1,500°C in a furnace.
  2. Rolling: The molten glass flows between two water-cooled metal rollers. One roller is engraved with the water pattern, which imprints the ripple design onto the glass surface.
  3. Annealing: The patterned glass ribbon passes through an annealing lehr where it is gradually cooled to relieve internal stresses.
  4. Cutting: The cooled glass is cut to standard or custom sizes.

Unlike surface coatings or films, the water pattern is physically embossed into the glass surface—making it permanent and resistant to wear, fading, or peeling.

Key Features

  • Fluid Organic Pattern: Natural water ripple texture that flows freely, capturing the beauty of moving water
  • Light Transmission with Privacy: Allows natural daylight to pass through while obscuring clear visibility
  • Poetic Aesthetic: Creates an oil painting-like smudge effect through the glass, adding artistic charm to any space
  • Permanent Pattern: Embossed into the glass surface—will not fade, wear, or peel over time
  • Soft Diffused Light: Irregular rippled surface creates soft, distorted light refractions
  • Versatile Colors: Available in clear, bronze, blue, green, grey, and amber
  • Processing Compatible: Can be cut, ground, drilled, tempered, laminated, and printed
  • Wide Thickness Range: Available from 3mm to 12mm

Optical Performance

ThicknessVisible Light Transmittance (VLT)Visual Effect
3mm40-85%High light transmission with moderate privacy
4mm40-85%Balanced light and privacy
5mm40-85%Balanced light and privacy
6mm40-85%Good privacy with excellent light
8mm40-85%Enhanced privacy with good light

Light transmittance ranges from 40% to 85% depending on haze level and texture density. Clear water patterned glass typically delivers higher transmission; colored glass (bronze, blue, green, grey) will have lower VLT depending on the tint density.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the difference between water patterned glass and other patterned glass patterns?

A: Water patterned glass—also known as water ripple glass or water wave glass—features a fluid, organic ripple texture that mimics the natural movement of water across a surface. The pattern flows freely without rigid rules, creating a freehand, poetic aesthetic. Other popular patterns include Nashiji (pear-skin texture), Mistlite (fine mist-like texture), Karatachi (intersecting lines), Moru (vertical fluted stripes), Flora (floral motif), and May Flower. Water patterned glass is particularly valued for its organic, natural aesthetic and the soft, hazy, oil painting-like effect it creates.

Q2: What is the light transmittance of water patterned glass and can it be tempered?

A: Water patterned glass typically delivers visible light transmittance ranging from 40% to 85%, depending on the haze level and texture density. Clear water patterned glass generally achieves higher transmission; colored variants (bronze, blue, green, grey) will have lower VLT depending on the tint density. Yes, KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS water patterned glass is fully compatible with tempering (EN 12150), laminating (EN ISO 12543), and insulating glass unit fabrication. The pattern is permanently embossed into the glass surface and will not be affected by the tempering process.

Q3: What thicknesses, sizes, and colors are available for water patterned glass?

A: KINGSTAR BUILDING GLASS water patterned glass is available in thicknesses from 3mm to 12mm. Standard sizes include 1500×2000mm, 1830×2134mm, 1830×2440mm, and 1830×1220mm. Colors are available in clear, bronze, blue, green, grey, and amber. Custom sizes can be produced to meet specific project requirements.
